It is believed that the Brahma was developed from large feather legged birds called Shanghais (Cochins) that were imported from China into America in the 1840's. These were crossed with a Malay type bird from India that introduced the pea-comb. The name Brahma is taken from the river Brahmaputra in India. The breed arrived in the UK in the 1850's. Brahmas are majestic, docile birds and reliable mothers who, due to their size, can sit on a large number of eggs. Brahmas prefer dry conditions because of their heavily feathered feet. They are not active flyers and are therefore easily contained.
