Named after the French town of Marans the breed was imported into the UK in the 1920's. The Marans is popular as it lays a large number of rich, dark brown eggs. Recently Copper Black, Copper Blue and French Wheaten varieties, that lay darker eggs, have been imported. Marans are generally placid and are therefore easy to keep. Given space they are very active but they also thrive in contained environments.
Egg colour: Dark brown.
We keep: Cuckoo, French Copper Black, French Copper Blue, French Wheaten and Splash Female.
