The Norfolk Grey was developed in Norwich by Frederick Myhill. When it was first shown in 1920 it was named ‘Black Maria’. Given the recency of the Great War this was hardly appropriate given the association with German shells of the same name. However, following a rechristening to "Norfolk Grey" in 1925, the breed prospered. An active forager, the Norfolk Grey is ideal for large gardens or smallholdings as they will find much of their own food.
